Hackers breached a pair of file servers containing personal information belonging to more than 4,000 University of Maine students who have sought mental health services from the campus counseling center, school officials said Tuesday.
The servers hacked on the Orono campus contained names and Social Security numbers, as well as confidential clinical records dating to 2002. There's no way of knowing whether data were viewed or downloaded, but the university is working under a worst-case scenario, officials said.

"Identity theft must be a top concern and consequently we are taking strong measures to assist those whose information may have been exposed and to prevent further security intrusions," said Robert Dana, vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

All told, the servers contained information about 4,585 students. The campus police department is leading the investigation, in consultation with federal prosecutors and computer crimes experts from the Secret Service.
