The main drawback of using most biometric systems -- other than that they are often expensive -- is that they sacrifice some measure of personal privacy for the sake of convenience. Biometrics is the science of recognizing a person on the basis of physical or behavioral characteristics. I've followed the biometrics industry for a long time, even writing about the field's emerging technologies now and then. Over the years, I've gone from proponent to critic and back again. And now I find myself somewhere in between.
